Playing their second away game in a row, SV Werder Bremen came out the other side of a nerve-wracking encounter with SV Sandhausen with a point, drawing 2-2. Nicolai Rapp gave the Green-Whites an early lead (12’) before Pascal Testroet brought Sandhausen level from the penalty spot (29’). He then scored again (84’) to edge Sandhausen in front late on, but Niclas Füllkrug popped up with an equaliser in the second minute of injury time to make it 2-2.

Line-up and team news: Markus Anfang made three personnel changes to the team that suffered defeat in Darmstadt. He brought Leonardo Bittencourt and Romano Schmid in for Mitchell Weiser and Eren Dinkci, and there was a change at right-back as Felix Agu came in for Jean Manuel Mbom.

Starting XI: Zetterer – Ducksch, Bittencourt, Veljkovic, Schmid, Schmidt, Rapp, Mai, Agu, Gruev und Friedl.

Bench: Pavlenka – Jung, Füllkrug, Assalé, Schönfelder, Nankishi, Mbom, Dinkci und Weiser.

Werder on top until the penalty

First-half highlights:

8’: Huge chance for the hosts! Wake up, lads! Zenga gets past the defence on the right flank and plays the ball across the six-yard box. Arne Sicker lunges to try and get on the end of it but just misses the ball. And breathe!

12’: Goal for SVW! Nicolai Rapp makes it 1-0 to Werder. What a start! Werder with the perfect response to SV Sandhausen threatening our goal! Marco Friedl looks up on the left-edge of the penalty box and picks out Nicolai Rapp with a brilliant pass, and the midfielder only has to poke it home to give Werder the lead. Great goal!

21’: Next big chance for Sandhausen! Close again! Dennis Diekmeier crosses into the box from the right flank and finds Testroet, who fires a header towards goal which goes just wide of the left-post.

27: Penalty to Sandhausen, how frustrating! A poor backpass from Lars Lukas Mai is intercepted by Ajdini. Zetterer rushes out but commits a foul on the SVS player.

29’: Goal for Sandhausen as Pascal Testroet converts the penalty to make it 1-1.

32’: Chance for Schmid! Leonardo Bittencourt and Romano Schmid look to retake the lead straightaway. Bittencourt puts a sharp, flat cross into the box from the left wing and Romano Schmid stretches out but just cannot make the necessary contact.

35’: SVS with a dangerous free-kick! Marvel Ritzmaier crosses the ball in and Aleksandr Zhirov is in the right place to head the ball, but his header goes slightly over Bremen’s goal.

40’: A huge opportunity for Ajdini! Close yet again! Okoroji dribbles well down the left-hand side and plays it to Ajdini, who takes a shot on goal which narrowly sails over the crossbar.

42’: Double chance for Ducksch! First, his free-kick beats the Sandhausen wall, but it saved by Drewes, and from the resulting corner the ball falls to Ducksch who has another go from just outside the box, and his attempt curls just wide this time. Good efforts!

Füllkrug scores at the death

Second-half highlights:

59’: Chance for Werder! They are playing at real pace. Romano Schmid plays it to Leonardo Bittencourt who then puts it into a dangerous area in the box. But unfortunately, Marvin Ducksch is unable to get there in time. We could have been in there!

66’: Niclas Füllkrug works it well and has a go from outside of the penalty box. His powerful effort goes just wide of the right post. Keep it up, Lücke!

70’: Eren Dinkci is looking to make an impact off the bench. He drives into the box from the right and lets fly, but his curling effort is off target.

72’: Another huge chance for Schmid after some great build-up play by Werder! Füllkrug and Schmid combine well, and the Austrian has a free shot on goal, but the keeper saves it and concedes a corner. The SVS keeper doesn’t look too confident as he tries to claim the ball, but Werder cannot make anything from it.

76’: Dinkci with another chance! Bittencourt plays it to him in the box and he turns sharply to let off a shot on goal, but it’s a weak effort which Drewes can hold on top rather easily.

78’: Schmid close again! This time, the ball ricochets off Füllkrug and Schmid is quickest to react. He fires at goal, but Drewes makes himself big and gets down to save the shot.

84’: Goal for Sandhausen. Pascal Testroet makes it 2-1 to the hosts. Unbelievable. Dennis Diekmeier has the time and space to cross the ball in from the right flank and finds Testroet at the back post, who is unmarked, and he simply heads the ball home.

90+2’: Goooal! Niclas Füllkrug scores to bring us level! Lücke gets a last-minute chance and slots it home to make it 2-2! Yeeees!

90+5’: Füllkrug almost wins it! Marvin Ducksch crosses it in again and Füllkrug stretches to try and turn the ball home with the tip of his foot, and the ball strikes the crossbar. So close!

Summary: The whole Werder family can finally breathe normally again. We thought we’d lost it when Testroet bagged his brace, but Werder showed great spirit to get back into it, above all Niclas Füllkrug. His stoppage-time equaliser came at a great time, and he almost won it at the very end but was denied by the crossbar. Werder can be satisfied with the draw after a wild game.
