Matchday 34 is just two short days away. The final day of the season, and one more question is left to be answered: will SV Werder Bremen play in the Bundesliga next season? “Everybody knows what this game means and we want to have a good mixture of excitement and concentration,” explained head coach Ole Werner, adding: “The lads feel a lot like I do right now; there’s a lot of excitement, but also a bit of tension and a real atmosphere of focus, which we want to carry onto the pitch.”

Friday’s press conference ahead of Sunday’s season finale at home to SSV Jahn Regensburg (15:30 CEST) got underway with some good news from coach Werner: “Apart from Manuel Mbom, every player has completed the week’s training sessions to the best of their abilities. Ömer Toprak is also back to full fitness and is a candidate for the starting lineup,” said the 34-year-old, who said there were not going to be any special arrangements on matchday: “We’re going to the stadium as normal, having a meal together, and then going about business as normal.”

The final game, a potentially pivotal one, is being played as if it were any other – Werner was concentrated on the opposition’s strengths: “Regensburg play a very high-pressing, aggressive game, so it will be vital for us to defend from the front and force quick transitions.” Something else which Werder’s head coach is keeping to a normal level is the excitement ahead of the game: “There will be a lot of emotions on the pitch alongside that concentration. We know the situation we’re in and we’re really looking forward to finishing the season on a high,” Werner said.
