The new SVW head coach is excited about his new role: “The fact that Werder got in touch with me was first of all recognition for myself and my work. During our discussions, the club’s hierarchy showed how highly they value me and informed me of their plans for the coming years. I was fully on board and didn’t need to take long to decide about coming to Werder after these conversations. Bremen have a good team with potential and have established themselves in the Bundesliga over the last three years. I would now like to continue this development together with the players. I’m really looking forward to this challenge.”
Steffen, who made 207 Bundesliga and 75 2. Bundesliga appearances for Bayer Uerdingen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and MSV Duisburg during his playing career, had been at SV Elversberg since the 2018/19 season. He helped the Saarland-based side climb from the Regionalliga to the 2. Bundesliga during his time at the club. Steffen had previously served as head coach of Chemnitzer FC, Stuttgarter Kickers and Preußen Münster, and also spent time working with the youth academies of Borussia Mönchengladbach and MSV Duisburg. Werder Bremen will be his first role as a head coach in the Bundesliga.
