Nine years is a lifetime in professional football – and that’s exactly how long Milos Veljkovic has spent at Werder Bremen. The 29-year-old centre-back joined SVW back in 2016 as a 20-year-old from Tottenham Hotspur. Over the years, he developed from a promising young talent into a first-team regular and eventually an established leader. Even after the club’s relegation in 2021, he stayed loyal and played a crucial role in helping the team bounce straight back. In total, the Serbia international with Swiss roots made 243 appearances for the club. In this farewell interview, he looks back on emotional moments, his bond with the fans, and why Werder always felt like home.

WERDER.DE: Moin Milos, you’ve spent nine years at the club and had a proper send-off at the Weserstadion. What went through your mind on that day?

Milos Veljkovic: It was an emotional rollercoaster. I told myself I wasn’t going to cry or get too emotional – but I just couldn’t help it. It was very intense. My family was there, the fans were incredible... it was just an unbelievable moment.

WERDER.DE: Let’s rewind nearly a decade. Do you remember your first day in Bremen? Anything that stands out?

Milos Veljkovic: I went straight to the Weserstadion. I remember thinking, “This is a really cool stadium – I want to play here and become a regular.” Even back then, I was already thinking about the future. Everyone was so warm and welcoming from the start. I felt right at home and enjoyed it straight away.

WERDER.DE: Did you imagine your career would go the way it did – that you’d become a first-team regular and stay here so long?

Milos Veljkovic: I always believed in myself, but I never imagined I’d be at one club for so long – especially one like Werder Bremen, with all its history. That makes me really proud.

WERDER.DE: What made the city of Bremen special for you?

Milos Veljkovic: My family felt at home here, and so did my closest friends. That gives you a really good feeling. People in this city live for Werder. You can sense it everywhere. That’s not something you find just anywhere. I’m really grateful for that.

WERDER.DE: Has Bremen become a second home for you?

Milos Veljkovic: Yes, definitely. I always used to say Basel, Belgrade, and my home village in Serbia were “home,” but I think Bremen belongs on that list now too.

“It was really important to me to help the club”

WERDER.DE: What will you miss the most – the stadium, the team, the day-to-day routine?

Milos Veljkovic: It’s a fantastic group of players, and we’ve shared so much. A lot of them have been around for quite a while too. I can’t name everyone, but there’s the staff as well – Adis Lovic the physio has been with me nearly the whole time, so has Florian Lauerer. Marcel Abanoz has also been around a while. Then guys like Marco Friedl, Michael Zetterer, now Felix Agu, Justin, Burkey... honestly, I’d name them all if I could. And of course, lots of people have moved on who meant a lot to me. It’s a really special club with very special people.

WERDER.DE: You’ve been part of the team since 2016. What were the most important or memorable moments for you?

Milos Veljkovic: The friendships I’ve made – like with Ulisses Garcia; we spent every day together in those first four years, we were inseparable. My debut was something else. I had goosebumps. I just looked around and thought “wow.” There were so many great moments – the game in Dortmund, the match in Berlin that felt like a home game. Honestly, there were too many to count. Promotion, my scorpion-kick goal... lots of highlights.

WERDER.DE: You stayed after the team was relegated. Was it important for you to help get things back on track?

Milos Veljkovic: The club wanted to keep a core group of experienced players – guys who understood what it means to play for Werder. It was really important to me to help out. Thankfully, we did it right away. That season felt like three seasons in one. It was unreal.

Thank you for countless memories. Thank you for your unbelievable support. I – and we as a team – always knew we could count on you. That means everything to me.
Milos Veljkovic

WERDER.DE: Was this your best season at Werder?

Milos Veljkovic: It was a brilliant season – definitely in the top two. Right up there with the year we just missed out on Europe and finished seventh.

WERDER.DE: What did you learn during the tough times?

Milos Veljkovic: That the fans stick with the club through thick and thin, and they’re patient. They know how big this club is and the kind of tradition it has. Of course, they wanted us back in the Bundesliga as soon as possible, but they still showed so much patience. That’s a big reason why we made it back.

WERDER.DE: How did your role within the team change over time? You arrived as a youngster and ended up part of the team council.

Milos Veljkovic: I came here as a young player, and it wasn’t easy at the start. So it was really important to me that, as I got older and more established, I helped the younger guys. I think I did that quite well – on the pitch and even more off it. I became someone a lot of new players could turn to, maybe because of the languages I speak, but also because I remember what that phase was like myself. I tried to take responsibility on the pitch quite early too, and that came naturally to me.

WERDER.DE: You’re heading to Red Star Belgrade. Why did you choose to make that move?

Milos Veljkovic: My family and I have supported Red Star forever. Marko Marin is the sporting director there – I have a great relationship with him. We were in close contact, and that played a big part in my decision. It’s a massive club with a huge history. And of course, it’s home – my family lives nearby. After 15 years abroad, I’m going back home. My mum and dad are over the moon.

WERDER.DE: How do you want Werder fans to remember you?

Milos Veljkovic: I hope they remember someone who always gave everything for the club. Someone who identified with Werder, who took on responsibility on and off the pitch. Someone who brought people along and showed what it means to play for this club.

WERDER.DE: Any final words for the fans?

Milos Veljkovic: Thank you for countless memories. Thank you for your unbelievable support. I – and we as a team – always knew we could count on you. That means everything to me.

WERDER.DE: Thank you for the interview, Milos. All the best for your next chapter.
